Question: How do I tell my husband his spelling sitnks?

Dear Lounge Advice,

What would be a nice way to tell me husband that his spelling stinks, and embarasses me when he sends out emails. It just sounds uneducated, and I feel like it makes us look bad, What do I do?

Sincerely,

(Anonymous)

Dear (Anonymous),

I've had this problem with a past partner. I explained as nicely as possible that the first impression is so important, and unfortunately, some people will judge you based on your spelling abilities. Tell him that although you don't agree that people should be judged on this, it will happen. Offer to spellcheck his e-mails for him. I will tell you, that even when you approach this topic delicately, he still may take offense. My ex-partner didn't take it too well at first. However, you are absolutely correct to be concerned about this. It may even take you a few times to get your point across. Let him know that you don't intend this as a personal affront. Rather, you are merely trying to make a good impression on people, and are fully willing to help.
The LL e-mail system also has spellcheck, so perhaps you could suggest that he uses this before sending things out. If he is sending e-mails out without using even the spellcheck program, people will view this as laziness more than anything.
