Question: After a break-up and an ex's negative comments about me, how do I keep friends?

Dear Lounge Advice,

After a three year realtionship we broke-up and he has been talking about bad about me to all our friends. How do I keep our friends without making them have to choose? This is so frustrating to me. I don't want to talk about our break-up but still want to be able to have fun?

Dear (Anonymous),

I've been in this situation before. Take the high road here. Do NOT speak ill of him. That's the first step. Second, if they're you friends, they should have the common sense to know that there are three sides to every story. If they choose him over you because they believe everything he says, not only are they naive, but they're obviously not cut out to be your friends anymore.
Keep contact with these friens, but....
If they happen to bring the subject up to you here's the perfect response (one I use a lot)
"It's in the past and I want to move on. I don't want to say anything negative about him because it would be in bad taste and I'd like him to be able to move on with his life too".
