My daughter was diagnosed with sleep apnea about 4 years ago (at 14). She is not overweight at all, but has an extremely narrow airway & her throat relaxed so much when she slept, that it cut off her air. She used a c-pap for over a year no problem, but as she got older, she realized she did not want to go off to college with the machine! We consulted a specialist at Stanford, who recommended a surgery similar to the one others have mentioned: Remove the Uvula, Adenoids & tonsils, and enlarge and reshape the soft palate. The surgery was somewhat effective, but we realized after another year or so that she still really needed the c-pap :( After a bit of searching, we discovered the Oasys Oral/nasal System, which is a dental appliance. We went to this Dr.:
California Center for Craniomandibular Disorders the Dental Practice of Mark Abramson, D.M.D, Inc 35 Renato Court Redwood City, CA 94061 650 369-9227 fax 650 369-9241 madds@sbcglobal.net
After some months of wearing the appliance, my daughter feels much "perkier" and able to concentrate better. The bonus? Not nearly as awful looking as the c-pap, so she uses at college!
Hope this helps a bit...good luck!
