I was going to post this in the vaginosis thread, since people were singing the praises of H2O2 in there, but realized it was just toooo far off topic. So this thread can be for all the wonderful ways we use hydrogen peroxide. ;) I'll start:
I use hydrogen peroxide in my ears for the last couple of years... to prevent colds and flu. As I understand it, it was a theory by a German doctor/scientist who said that bacteria and viruses can enter through the ear, nose, and/or eyes, and that of the 3 the ear was the only one that wasn't very good a self-cleaning. He theorized that the bugs will use the canal as a place to replicate, and once their numbers are high enough there's not a lot your immune system can do about it, and then you get sick... The treatment works best BEFORE it gets to that point - before you're actually sick, or when you're just barely starting to feel 'off'.
His studies have never been attempted in the U.S., to my knowledge, but I would swear it works. I get a lot fewer colds and flus than I used to, and they don't last as long. I'll particularly do it if people around me are getting sick, or if I've just been on an airplane (and if I don't, I'm almost guaranteed to pick something up on my flight).
Lying on your side, you pipette about an inch of H2O2 (the weak solution - 3% - that's commonly sold in grocery stores or over-the-counter in pharmacies, or - apparently - in huge jugs at Costco) in the bottom of a clean straw, drop it into your ear canal and wait - or, if you have steady hands you can just pour it in your ear straight out of the bottle, but I tend to over-do it and soak the pillow...
Anyway, if it's still like pond water, you're probably fine. Leave it in for a minute or two, to be sure that it's not just that it was working its' way through dry wax, then roll over and do the other ear. If it's 'boiling', either gently or vigorously... then try to put up with it for as long as you can (several minutes). Roll over and do the other ear. If one or both of your ears were 'boiling', then do it twice a day (like before bed and again when you wake up) until it's back to being 'pond water'.
My doctor gave it a seal of approval - not that she was saying that it worked, just that she didn't think it would do me any harm. Worst-case scenario, my ears are wax free. ;)
What fun things do YOU do with hydrogen peroxide??? (I do a few of the things mentioned in the other thread, but I don't want to steal your thunder. ;) )
