I have had numerous questions about pills, creams, and potions that claim to increase length and girth of the penis.

Unfortunately, there are no products I have read or heard about that actually increase a man's length or girth with controlled clinical trials to prove it. The internet is littered with sites selling the sure fire way to get a bigger and longer penis. They all seem to have testimonials of men swearing they gained 2, 3, or even more inches using their product. I can tell you with confidence they are all scams. Don't waste your money on their money back guarantees.

It does not take much internet searching to find a large number of men who complain that the product they tried did not work and that the manufacturer charged their credit card (sometimes repeatedly) and then made it very difficult or refused to refund money despite promises of a money back guarantee. Obviously the pills Viagra, Levitra, and Cialis all help with erections in men who are having erection difficulty. But these do not increase the erection girth or length.

There is growing evidence that less frequent erections can result in shortening of the penis over time. The strongest evidence for this is in men who completely lose their erections as a result of treatment for prostate cancer. Within only weeks, we see increased fibrosis (scar like tissue) in the penis. This leads to shortening of the penis that can be permanent. But this may also happen as a slow process over years in a man as he ages. We know that as men age, their erections get harder to maintain and less rigid. They can also have less nighttime erections. Normally, men have 3 to 5 erections per night. This is thought to help maintain good oxygen levels in the penis and this helps to maintain healthy penis tissue. If, as a man ages, he experiences loss of nightly erections, he may suffer shortening of the penis. The old adage "Use it or lose it" seems to apply to the penis as well.

How do you prevent this? It makes sense that having frequent erections would be helpful. This can be done with masturbation or sexual intercourse. Exercise has been shown to improve sexual function in men. Even 20 to 30 minutes of aerobic exercise (jogging, swimming, cycling, aerobics) 3 times a week can be very beneficial. It also makes sense to eat a healthy diet and avoid foods that are associated with heart disease (foods high in cholesterol and fat). If you are a smoker, stop smoking. Nicotine is a vasoconstrictor which means it narrows the diameter of blood vessels. Which means less blood getting to your penis. Also, over time, smoking has been proven to cause permanent blood vessel damage.

A good rule of thumb is that what is good for your heart is good for your penis and vice versa. If you do these things, you will likely live longer AND maintain a healthy sex life for many years.

In my practice, we have a "penis rehab" program for men who have lost the ability to achieve good quality erections whether it is from surgery, injuries, or just aging. We use a combination of medications (like Viagra, Muse, etc) as well as a vacuum stretching device. The goal is to prevent fibrosis of the penis tissue and to get the man back to being sexually active with his partner as soon as possible.

If anyone has a confidential question, please email me through this web site. As always, I (and my office) maintain the strictest confidentiality in our consultations with patients.
